Custom Orders

What is the lead time for custom cake orders?

While standard designs require 72-hour notice, custom orders may need considerably longer lead time. We do our best to accommodate last minute requests but, to avoid disappointment, we suggest reaching out as soon as your date and design concept has been decided. Most can be produced within five days of received payment, but some require more time.

What is the best way to reach someone working in the bakery?

If you need something urgently, please call the shop at 302-594-3966. Please leave a message if we do not answer. If your call is regarding a future order, we prefer customers  fill out the form on our Custom Order page. It will ask all the questions we need in order to initiate the process. If you prefer a call, we are happy to give you a ring once we have started by email and gotten some images and a general design idea.

Do you ship any bakery goods?

At this time we are unable to ship our pastries. They are quite delicate and do not ship well. Sorry!


What is the range in price for your cakes?

Our smallest cake starts at $25 and prices of custom cakes increase based on size and design. Click here for additional generalized pricing about custom cake designs.


When is payment due?

We require pre-payment for all custom cakes. Payment is due at the time of booking. Until payment is received the order is not finalized or in our calendar.

Orders and Payments

How do I place an order?

To begin an inquiry for a custom cake please fill out the inquiry form on our Custom Order page. For custom orders, please allow ample time as working out the details of a design may take several days/up to a week.

Can I modify or cancel my order?

Modifications are not suggested once the order is finalized but minor changes to design can sometimes be made at least 5 days prior to pick up. If there are no pre-made fondant pieces, cakes can be canceled at least 5 days prior to pick up. Any custom pieces that are already made will be deducted from the total or saved for the cake if/when it is re-ordered.

Is there wifi?

Yes! We are located in DE.CO food hall which offers free WIFI. We invite you to relax with a latte and a muffin, or meet up with friends to indulge in a slice of one of our decadent cakes.

Is there parking?

Street parking is available on many surrounding blocks and validated DE.CO parking is available in the 11th Street garage. After 5pm and on weekends there is parking validation available in the SP+ Parking garage on 11th and Orange Street if you spend $5 or more in DE.CO.

What are your hours of operation?

Monday-Thursday 7am-5pm

Friday 7am-8pm
Saturday & Sunday 8am-5pm

Are you open on holidays?

We are often closed on major holidays to allow our employees to spend time with their families. Please check the DE.CO website for specific days.

What are your cakes and buttercream like?

Most of our cakes are based on a traditional pound cake. They are more dense and moist, rather than light and fluffy. Our Swiss chocolate is rich and fudgy, a chocolate-lover’s favorite. Each cake is lightly soaked in a complimentary syrup to make sure it is extra moist and delicious on the day you slice it and for days beyond.

Our buttercream is a Swiss meringue style buttercream, which is buttery and less sweet than a classic American buttercream. It is made by whipping butter into a creamy meringue rather than adding powdered sugar to butter. This leads to a very smooth, silky frosting.  

When we enrobe cakes in fondant, we roll a very thin layer of fondant and place it over a fully-iced cake. This sets us apart from the many bakeries that simply “crumb-coat” the cake before adding fondant. This ensures you have the same amount of delicious frosting that you’d have if you simply ordered a buttercream cake.

How do I cut my cake into those picture-perfect slices?

Glad you asked! Each cut should be cut with a hot, clean knife. We recommend dipping the knife into a tall cup of hot water, then wiping dry with a clean kitchen towel. This should be repeated between each cut. It takes time, but trust us, it’s worth it! We can also provide a diagram to show how to cut our larger sized tiers into the maximum number of servings.  

Do you produce nut-free, gluten-free or vegan products?

At Spark’d, we strive to meet the needs of many dietary restrictions. We offer several gluten-free and vegan options, and many products that do not contain nuts. All of our products, however, are produced using equipment that also makes products containing milk, nuts, wheat, soy, and eggs. We ask our clients to consider this when placing an order for someone with a severe allergy.

Are any of your products Kosher?

Spark’d is not a certified Kosher facility.

Where are Spark’d products baked?

All the food products sold at Spark’d are baked right downstairs, in our extensive kitchen located in the HOTEL DU PONT.

What flavors of custom cakes do you offer?

You can view our list of flavors here. These are our favorite, but if there is something special that you’re looking for, we will happily design and create a custom cake combination just for you. We love the opportunity to be creative!

Storage of Cakes and Pastries

How should I store my Spark’d cakes?

We recommend picking your cake up the day of your event or the day before if the cake is being served before noon. The key to enjoy our cakes (or any cake for that matter) is temperature. We suggest cakes are left at room temperature at least 4-8 hours depending on the size of the cake and temperature of the room.

My cake has fondant. How do I store this cake?

Ideally, a fondant cake is kept in an air-conditioned, low humidity room. Please do not refrigerate fondant cakes as that may cause unsightly condensation and color bleeding.

How should I store my other baked goods?

As a habit, anything that was purchased at our storefront that was refrigerated should stay refrigerated and anything kept at room temperature should stay at room temperature. Cupcakes and cakes are best when brought to room temperature before eating. We recommend storing baked goods in an airtight container if you're not planning to eat them until the next day.

How should I store my leftover cake?

We highly recommend ordering extra cake, because there is truly nothing better than cake for breakfast! If stored correctly, it keeps for days or longer. Keep as much of the cake whole as possible, and press plastic wrap, parchment, or wax paper firmly to the cut side of the cake, so the only thing exposed to air is buttercream. Keep refrigerated and bring the portion you plan to enjoy to room temperature before eating.
